Preparatory works are set to begin on a planned high-speed railway between Germany and the Czech Republic.

A Mott MacDonald/Sudop Praha A.S. joint venture has been awarded a contract to carry out geotechnical and environmental surveys for the proposed railway, which would link Dresden with Ústí nad Labem and Litoměřice in the Czech Republic.

The line will form part of the Trans European Transport Network’s priority Orient/East Med transport corridor and the first phase of the Czech Republic’s high-speed rail network. The electrified railway will replace the existing route through the Elbe valley.

The contract will also include preparatory design work for bridges and tunnels and an initial economic viability study.

Tomáš Parák, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “This project is a major step into the new age for the Czech Republic’s railway infrastructure. As well as providing a direct link between Dresden and Prague, the new railway line is important as it will provide capacity enhancement for international traffic from the North of Europe and Baltic Sea ports to southern European countries. By developing a modern cross-border connection, it will strengthen the nation’s position in Europe.”
