DLR approaches suppliers in search for next generation trains

Docklands Light Rail (DLR) is looking to open a “technical dialogue” with rolling stock manufacturers as it starts to weigh up options for new trains.

According to a document published by Docklands Light Railway Ltd, the automated light rail system has seen passenger numbers increase by approximately 8 per cent a year, recording 110 million journeys in the year to March 2015.

New rolling stock will be required to meet demand and retire the 25-year-old B92 light rail vehicles (LRVs).

DLR said it was “likely” it would place an order for between 40 and 50 new trains.

“This is not a stage in a formal competitive process, and it is not the purpose of this dialogue to procure any part of the solution,” DLR stated.

“Rather, the purpose is to provide DLR Ltd with information on what is available and being developed in the marketplace to allow DLR Ltd to develop a strategic solution.”

  1. Well the older DLR Bombardier (B90/B92/B2K) rolling stocks do need to be replaced but DLR to keep their current Bombardier B07 rolling stocks for 5 years as Bombardier have produced these newer rolling stocks between 2005-2007 and went into service in 2008 for DLR.
