Siemens reveals 125mph EMU for UK

Siemens has presented a model of its new Desiro Verve intercity train.

The 125 mph electric multiple unit (EMU), which received an understated unveiling at the Railtex exhibition in Birmingham on May 12, is an intercity variation of Siemens’ Desiro platform targeted at the UK market.

This summer, Siemens will deliver the first of 115 12-car Desiro City trains to Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). The new ‘high capacity’ commuter trainsets will operate between Bedford and Brighton from 2016.

The Verve features a more aerodynamic exterior design than the Class 700 and an interior more suited to intercity travel.

  1. New Siemens Desiro Verve trains that could replace the 30+ year old Intercity fleet and even the Class 321’s and Class 317’s to be used on Abellio Greater Anglia and to replace the Class 43 HST fleet used on East Midlands Trains.

      • I guess I am talking stupid Steve but the Class 321’s and the Class 317’s are over 30 years old at least and they do need to be replaced at some stage in the near future. Abellio Greater Anglia would keep those trains for another 5 years even they are expiring in October 2016 but I reckon Hitachi would build & manufacture the AT200 Commuter Trains with new seats with leg space, Air-Conditioning and walkthrough passageway linking 4-car train to merge with another 4-car train (8 & 12-car trains).

      • Ok. I am talking rubbish. But there is a possibility of seeing on which train manufacture ie Bombardier, Hitachi or Siemens would win the contract to build new train to replace the HST’s and other older trains in the future.

    • I would doubt they’ll replace the 317/321 fleets with these. They’ll be an option (there’s also an intercity, 125mph version of the Bombardier Aventra and Hitachi would likely offer an AT300 variant- there will of course be tendering) for the Norwich-London fleet, but the 321s and 317s are more likely to be replaced with a commuter-spec Aventra, Desiro City, AT200 or whatever the manufacturers are offering when they eventually come up for replacement (most likely in 20m long, 4-car units with or without end corridor connections

  2. These would definitely be a much better option for the new Cambride/Peterborough to Brighton services
