Myanmar Railways has appointed Mitsubishi and Hitachi to roll out a modern signalling system between the capital Yangon and Pyuntasa.

Valued at 2.4 billion yen (€17.9 million), the contract includes the installation of a train monitoring system, an electronic interlocking system and an automatic level crossing protection system.

The contract, which is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), covers a 140-kilometre section of railway between Yangon Central Station and Pyuntasa Station.

Scheduled for completion in June 2017, the stretch of railway links the Yangon – Mandalay line with the Yangon loop line, both of which are due to be upgraded.
