Škoda’s high-speed 109E locomotive approved by German rail authority

Listen to this article

Škoda Transportation’s 109E locomotive has received authorisation to operate in Germany.

The three-system locomotive is already approved in Austria, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic and meets the necessary TSI to operate on the European high-speed network.

Škoda has invested more than Koruna 950 million developing the 109E. With a top speed of 200 km/h, it is the fastest domestic locomotive Škoda has ever built.

The 109E is compatible with both AC and DC catenary systems.

As well as České dráhy (ČD), Škoda has supplied the 109E to ZSSK in Slovakia.

In 2013, DB Regio ordered six 109E locomotives from the Czech manufacturer to operate on the high-speed line between Nuremberg, Ingolstadt and Munich.
