Three new metro train sets have gone into commercial service in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The five-car, Russian gauge metros, which have been produced by Alstom and Metrowagonmash, have gone into operation on Baku’s Red and Green lines.

They are first trains in Azerbaijan with connecting gangways.

Martin Vaujour, senior vice president of Alstom Transport for the CIS region, said: “These new metro cars will ensure safer and more comfortable trips in Baku. They have undergone the strictest quality control and comply with the highest standards.

“We intend to expand our co-operation with the Baku metro system, and we will continue delivering advanced metro cars, jointly manufactured in Azerbaijan, into the future.”

In 2010, Baku Metro published a 20-year development programme approving the construction of 53 new stations and an additional 84.3 kilometres of railway. By 2028, 1,100 metro cars will be replaced and additional trains will be procured to operate on the new lines.
