The 15.4-kilometre Ceneri Base Tunnel will not be completed until December 2020 – a year later than originally planned, the authority in charge of its construction has said.

AlpTransit Gotthard now hopes to open the new rail tunnel for the timetable change in 2020 following a delay in the tendering process.

Appeals were initially lodged against the authority’s decision to award two of the project’s major construction contracts to the Mons Ceneris Consortium and CPC Consortium.

AlpTransit Gotthard was told to re-run the competition – a decision that was eventually overturned by the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel – a 15.4-kilometre railway tunnel through Monte Ceneri – is being constructed alongside the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

The final breakthrough is now planned for the start of 2016.
