Expressions of interest are being sought for a contract to design, build and maintain a new fleet of high-capacity trains for Melbourne.

The $1.3 billion competition will deliver 37 new, longer trains for the region’s Cranbourne-Pakenham line.

It is described by Victoria’s state government as the largest investment in rolling stock in its history. It is part of a wider strategy to procure 100 new trains and 100 new trams over the course of the next 10 years.

The new trains will increase capacity on the route by 42 per cent, and they will complement ongoing upgrades to signalling and the state’s level crossing removal programme between Dandenong and the city.
