PKP Cargo and Greenbrier partner on freight wagon production

Listen to this article

Polish rail freight operator PKP Cargo has signed a letter of intent with US manufacturer Greenbrier to manufacture and supply thousands of wagons over the next few years.

PKP Cargo plans to invest PLN 11.5 million (€2.7 million) to set up a production line in Szczecin which, once established, will produce up to 500 wagons a year.

The partnership will significantly cut the cost of procuring new rolling stock, PKP Cargo has said. It will also reduce the maintenance cost associated with the current fleet of 61,5000 wagons – the majority of which are more than 25 years old.

Work on the new vehicles will start in early 2016, creating around 150 jobs within PKP Cargo.
