The Bechtel-led BACS consortium, which is building two of six planned metro lines for Riyadh, has commenced tunnelling works in the Saudi capital.

BACS is constructing lines 1 and 2 of the 176-kilometre Riyadh Metro – a project that includes 39 brand new stations.

The BACS consortium, which includes Bechtel, Almabani General Contractors and Siemens, is responsible for designing and constructing the two new lines and supplying all of the systems and rolling stock.

The first TBM, Mneefah, has been named after the horse of Saudi Arabia’s founder King. On average it will construct around 100 metres of tunnel per week. Altogether, the consortium will deploy seven TBMs, which will bore around 35 kilometres of tunnel.

Amjad Bangash, Bechtel’s project director, said: “The metro, set to be the cornerstone of Riyadh’s new public transport network, will revolutionise how people move around the city.

“Sending our team’s first tunnel boring machine on its underground voyage is a significant step for all.

“Getting early agreement on the alignment in the heart of the city was crucial to advance the detailed design work needed to start tunnelling. We appreciate the efforts that our client, Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), and many other stakeholders undertook in helping us achieve this.”
