Berlin orders first of new U-bahn trains

Berlin transport authority (BVG) has ordered 11 new IK series metro trains from Stadler Pankow following a trial of two pre-series vehicles on the city’s U-bahn network.

The four-car, bi-directional trains will arrive in 2017.

The €60 million orders follows a period of testing on Berlin’s U1 and U4 lines, which began in February.

Additional capacity has been created in the new trains by “ballooning” the carriages, making them 10cm wider than the current stock.
