London Underground has extended a four-year structures maintenance agreement with Skanska for an extra two years.

The deal, which covers around two thirds of the Tube network, includes the maintenance of more than a thousand bridges and 125 tunnels on the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, District, Bakerloo, Central, Victoria and Circle lines.

Other responsibilities include track and depot drainage, vegetation management and pest control.

The original four-year contract began in 2011 with an option to extend based on Skanska’s performance.

Campbell McKechan, Skanska’s contract manager, said: “This extension is a great reward for the hard work and determination shown by the team.

“Over the past four years, they’ve implemented huge efficiencies in order to save London Underground money, year-on-year, while at the same time improving quality.

“I also believe our safety record played a significant role in the renewal. Over 110 staff work every night in dark and inclement conditions, and despite these challenges I’m incredibly proud to say that we and our wider supply chain have worked almost one million hours accident-free.”
