Final design for an extension of Seattle’s light rail network has been cleared to go ahead.

The Federal Transit Administration has issued its Record of Decision (ROD) which approves the environmental case for the Lynnwood Link light rail extension.

Sound Transit will now apply for federal funding to build the 8.5-mile extension from Northgate to Lynnwood.

With the environmental review process concluded, Sound Transit can now proceed to the detailed design phase, which will begin early next year.

Construction is due to begin in 2018. The line could open as early as 2023.
