Algeria’s Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) has placed a €200 million order for 17 new intercity trains from Alstom.

The dual-mode Coradia Polyvalent trains, which are becoming a fixture of the French network, will be built and tested in France, arriving in Algeria in January 2018.

SNTF will operate the new fleet between Oran, Annaba, Constantine and Béchar.

The six-car trains have a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h and have been adapted to cope with the desert-like conditions they will encounter.
