The future of Island Line rail services on the Isle of Wight appear to have been secured.

The Isle of Wight Council said it had received assurance from the Department for Transport (DfT) that the Island Line will be included in the future South West Trains franchise, which is due to be tendered in spring 2017.

Deputy Leader of the council Stephen Stubbings said: “The meeting with the Department for Transport was extremely positive and constructive. It gives me great hope that together with the DfT and local stakeholders, we will find the right solution for the future of Island Line.”

The DfT said it was also looking for greater community input in shaping the franchise specification, a process that will get underway later this year.
