Skoda has completed delivery of a series of new battery-powered trams for the Turkish city of Konya.

The Czech manufacturer has supplied 12 low-floor trams capable of catenary-free operation.

The new vehicles add to the 60 ForCity trams already operating in Konya, the last of which arrived in the city in March.

Skoda has said the battery technology will allow the trams to operate at 30 km/h without overhead wires for at least three kilometres and potentially much further. During testing, the batteries achieved close to 20 kilometres.

Fitted to the roof of the trams, the battery system can be recharged by the overhead lines or in the depot.
