The President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, attended the formal opening of the Ayacucho tram line in Medellin.

At a ceremony on October 20, the line was officially launched. Although, it has been operating a trial service since October 15.

The 4.3-kilometre line includes nine stations and is expected to transport 85,000 passengers each day.

NTL, which is 51 per cent owned by Alstom, has supplied 12 Translohr STE5 trams, similar to those operating in France and Spain, for Medellin. The 39-metre trams have been engineered to cope with the system’s 12 per cent gradients.
