Alstom is to supply 70 additional metro cars for Metro de Panama.

As well as six new trains, the new vehicles will be used to extend the current Line 1 fleet from three to five-car sets.

The six new sets, which will be fitted with CBTC signalling, will increase the size of the Line 1 fleet to 26 trains.

Alstom, as part of a consortium which includes Thales, Sofratesa, CIM and TSO, will also upgrade the line’s signalling system and power supply and extend the existing depot to accommodate the longer trains.

Alstom will manufacture the new cars at its Santa Perpetua factory in Spain. Delivery will begin in early 2017.
