Stadler and Siemens have been awarded a framework contract to supply new trains for the Berlin S-Bahn.

The framework is for up to 1,380 vehicles. This week’s announcement includes a firm order for 106 trains: 85 four-car units and 21 two-car units.

The first 10 pre-production vehicles will enter service in 2020. Following a successful period in passenger service, the remaining trains will be added to the network by 2023. The new trains will be used on the Ringbahn lines, including S41 and S42, and southeastern feeder lines S47, S46 and S8.

Stadler will be responsible for the main mechanical and structural works while Siemens will supply the bogies and the power supply, braking, control and passenger information systems.

The new trains, which will be manufactured in Berlin, will feature walk-through gangways and air conditioning.

Ulf Braker, member of the group executive board of Stadler Pankow, said: “The first 10 vehicles will be pre-production and test vehicles.

“They will undergo extensive tests before entering regular passenger service – which will enable us to incorporate possible findings from operations in Berlin in the series.”
