DB Regio has signed a deal with Alstom worth €130 million for 24 three and four-car Coradia Continental EMUs.

The new regional trains, which will be produced at Alstom’s factory in Salzgitter, will operate on the Breisgau S-Bahn network and are due to go into service at the end of 2019.

The three and four-car trains will have capacity for 164 and 249 seats respectively and a top operating speed of 160 km/h.

Wide gangways and low floors, made possible by fitting the traction equipment on the roof rather than under foot, will allow better movement of passengers throughout the train, Alstom has said.

More than 200 Coradia Continental trains are in service in Germany. This new fleet will be equipped with Wi-Fi, real-time passenger information screens and power points.
