Stage 2 of Sydney Metro, which will extend the line from Chatswood to Sydenham and on to Bankstown, has received planning approval.

Stage 2, Sydney Metro City & Southwest, will involve the construction of 16.5 km of new railway and seven new stations between Chatswood and Sydenham – the most significant part of which will be 15.5km of new twin-bored tunnels beneath the Sydney Harbour and CBD.

An upgrade of an existing line will extend Sydney Metro City & Southwest out from Sydenham to Bankstown – one of the city’s south-western suburbs.

The city’s new metro network is being delivered in three stages. Stage 1, known as Sydney Metro Northwest, is a 36 km line between Rouse Hill and Chatswood. Work is well advanced and the line is scheduled to open in two years time.

Announcing the progress on Stage 2, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said: “The scale of this project will rival any megaproject across the globe, and today marks the start of even more grunt work.”

Although the contract for the construction of Stage 2 has not yet been awarded, work is expected to begin this year and the first tunnel boring machine will be in the ground by the end of 2018, Transport for NSW has said.
