Locomotive manufacturer Siemens has received an order for up to 200 of its Vectron freight locomotives from Austrian state railway operator ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen).

The framework contract covers up to 100 AC (alternating current) locos, 50 AC locos with diesel power modules and 50 multisystem (MS) locos.

The first 30 locomotives, all to be the MS version, were confirmed at the time of signing. They will be built in Germany at Munich-Allach and the first examples will be delivered by summer 2018.

To be operated by the Rail Cargo Group, the freight division of ÖBB, the new locos will be used for cross-border freight transport between Austria and surrounding countries.

All locomotives will be fitted with ETCS (European Train Control System) in addition to national signalling systems and will have a top speed of 160km/h (100mph) and a maximum output of 6,400kW (8,500hp).

Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Mobility Division, commented: “Winning the biggest tender for locomotives in Europe underscores one thing above all: the capability of our Vectron platform. It offers the greatest flexibility throughout the locomotive’s entire lifecycle. And for operators that means they can make long-term plans for the future.”
