Solaris and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) have put a full-size mockup of one of the city’s new trams on display outside the Leipziger Messe.

It is the first opportunity the public have had to see inside one of the new vehicles.

LVB, Leipzig’s public transport operator, signed a framework contract with Polish manufacturer Solaris in 2015 for a new fleet of light rail vehicles which gave it the option to order up to 41 trams by 2020.

Solaris has so far received firm orders for 14 units. The first of the new trams has already been delivered and is undergoing testing and homologation with LVB.

The four-car trams are 37.63 metres long, 2.3 metres wide and feature four driving bogies and a single non-powered Jacobs bogie.

Among its features, the tram is fitted with an intelligent lighting system that adjusts the colour and intensity of the light depending on the conditions outside. “In winter the lights will shine in warm hues and in the summer – in cold hues, which ought to raise the travel comfort considerably,” said Solaris.
