DB Regio has confirmed an order with Siemens for two new fleets of electric trains for regional services in Germany’s Rhine Valley.

From 2020, DB Regio will run regional express services on the Karlsruhe – Offenburg – Basel route and regional services on the Offenburg – Freiburg – Basel/Neuenburg (Switzerland) route.

Today, Siemens has confirmed an order for 15 four-car Desiro HC EMUs for services between Karlsruhe, Offenburg and Basel, and 24 three-car Mireo units between Offenburg, Freiburg and Basel/Neuenburg.

The middle two cars of the four-car Desiro units will be double-deck while the Mireo trains will be single deck throughout.

This is the first order Siemens has received for its articulated Mireo design since it was launched at InnoTrans last year.

Siemens says the Mireo will reduce energy consumption by 25 per cent and the design of its bogies will make it significantly quieter.
