Belmond has launched what is describing as South America first luxury sleeper service.

The Andean Explorer, which is operated by PeruRail, cuts through the Peruvian Andes on the Cusco-Puno-Arequipa line.

According to the hotel and leisure company it is South America’s first luxury sleeper train and can carry 48 passengers at a time.

The Explorer has a number of specialist cars including an open-deck observation car, a spa car, a lounge area, dining car and an onboard library.

The decor throughout is based on Peruvian culture with vibrant colours and natural tones, says Belmond, as well as handwoven fabrics, and soft tones of Alpaca wool.

The first departure left Cusco for Arequipa on May 4 on a two-night journey.
