Strukton Rail is to install European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on a section of test track in Sweden as the country prepares a wider roll out of the signalling system.

The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has tasked the Dutch firm to install the system between Katrineholm and Åby, so that it can be tested in a real environment without affecting traffic.

Strukton will prepare the test track technology for the new system and install balises, substations, electrical and telecommunications equipment, and provide the signalling connections between new and existing technology.

Work is expected to begin this week and be completed by November, 2017.

Sweden currently uses the older automatic train control (ATC) signalling system but ERTMS is expected to be installed across Europe by 2035.

Strukton Rail location manager Eva Spove said: “We will parallelise the ATC signals of the track with the two different ERTMS systems to be tested.

“We will install signalling coders at the end of the track, sending information to the onboard equipment on the track’s test train, which of the ERTMS systems the train will follow.”
