Queensland Rail prepares for Cyclone Yasi

As the rest of North Queensland prepares for Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Queensland Rail has taken measures to ensure the safety of its staff and customers in this region.

Queensland Rail has secured boom gates and stations in the greater Townsville and Cairns region, and trains have been stowed on higher ground out of cyclone affected areas.

Yesterday afternoon, Queensland Rail put on a special rail service travelling southbound from Townsville, to assist residents with evacuation.

For many people, this was the only way out of town as flights booked out and roads were subject to flash flooding.

174 customers used this service to evacuate to safer areas, with about 50 boarding at Townsville; more than 90 at Proserpine and more along the way.

The last Tilt Train service from Cairns is also due to arrive in Brisbane around 4pm today with 170 customers on board.

After this, all Traveltrain services between Rockhampton and Cairns will be suspended until Friday as Queensland Rail joins the rest of the state in bracing for Tropical Cyclone Yasi to approach.
