Rail union RMT has secured a ‘groundbreaking pay and rewards package offer’ to prevent strikes taking place during the Olympics.

Over fears strikes by union members could ruin London’s 2012 Olympic Games, Network Rail made an agreement with the RMT which means they are unable to dismiss any of its members and any disputes will be fast-tracked or held off until September.

Both sides are said to want the Olympics to run smoothly, which means public transport must be fully operational.

Around 10,000 workers will receive an additional £500 for working through the Olympics period.

They will also receive ‘more than 10% pay increase’ on the basic over the next two years – 5.2% this year and RPI plus .5% in 2012.

An agreement of a disputes procedure throughout the Olympics period that means no union member can be dismissed and which recognises the continuing right to withdraw labour.

David Higgins, Chief Executive of Network Rail, said the deal was ‘great news.’

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“This is a ground breaking deal that gives Network Rail staff more than 10% on the basic between now and next year and which also puts a further £500 in their pockets for working shifts during the Olympics.

“The package recognises the important role that transport workers will be expected to play during the games and rewards them financially while protecting their union rights at the same time.”

Strikes by the RMT planned for next week on London Underground have been suspended following talks.
