Rail stations improve for Greater Manchester passengers

Rail passengers in Greater Manchester will see work to deliver improvements at several railway stations begin over the coming months.

Work is due to start later this summer to install customer information screens, security cameras, public address systems and help points at Ashton-under-Lyne, Bramhall, Brinnington, Marple, Marple Rose Hill, Reddish North, Walkden and Westhoughton stations.

The new facilities are funded by Transport for Greater Manchester as part of its Rail Station Improvement Strategy, which aims to make smaller stations more passenger-friendly.

Councillor Doreen Dickinson, Chair of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Rail Network sub-committee, said:

“More and more people in Greater Manchester are choosing to travel by rail and it’s important that stations have the kind of facilities that improve convenience and security for rail passengers.

“Things like information screens, help points and security cameras are not only useful for passengers, but also boost confidence in the rail network, especially for those who don’t regularly take the train.”

The planned improvements, which will cost in the region of £800,000, will be carried out over the coming months and are due to be completed by the end of the year.

This is the latest round of rail station improvements funded by Transport for Greater Manchester (formerly Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority) over the past four years.
