Indian Railways sees 12% growth

Indian Railways has seen a growth of 12.15% in revenue earnings in the first quarter of this fiscal year, across passenger and freight traffic.

Revenue earnings were Rs. 24,756.18 crore (equivalent to 10 million) in comparison to the same period last year, which was Rs. 22,074.92 crore.

Indian Railways earned Rs. 16811.76 from freight transportation, an increase of 12.61% from the same period last year. 233.77 million tonnes of freight were carried, an increase of 7% on last year’s Q1.

During the month of June month alone, freight traffic carried 76.54 million tonnes, an increase of 4.60 million tonnes, or 6%, from the same period last year.

Passenger traffic grew over 10%, from Rs. 6841.16 crore to Rs. 6190.10 crore.

The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 694.63 crore during April-June 2011 compared to Rs. 626.03 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 10.96%.

The total number of passengers carried during April-June 2011 was 2039.82 million compared to 1936.98 million last year, showing an increase of 5.31%, Indian Railways stated.

On the suburban train networks, more than 1008.09 million passengers, an increase of 4.46%, booked tickets during the first quarter.

The non-suburban sectors accounted for 1031.73 million passengers, a rise of 6.15%, compared to 965.05 million passengers accounted for the corresponding period last year.
