Rail disruption after Edinburgh train derailment

At 17:55 last night (Wednesday) an out-of-service ScotRail train became derailed on approach to Edinburgh Waverley station.

The front bogie (set of wheels) on the rear train unit left the rail as a result of the incident. The train was carrying no passengers and two crew, neither of whom was injured.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been on-site conducting its official investigation since the early hours of this morning.

Network Rail has said once the checks have been completed by the RAIB, engineers will be able to begin their recovery operation.

Train operator ScotRail has said delays may continue until tomorrow due to repair works.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said:

“The RAIB is currently on-site conducting its investigation into last night’s derailment. Once the RAIB hands the site back, our engineers will be able to assess any damage to the infrastructure and prepare for the removal of the vehicle.

“We are working with train operators to run as many services as possible today and will restore more services as soon as we can.”

UPDATE: No services will operate into and out of Waverley Station via Princes Street Gardens after 2100 hours tonight (28 July).

ScotRail said that services to the west and north of Edinburgh will terminate/start at Haymarket Station instead.

Buses will operate between Waverley and Haymarket until end of service tonight.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: “We apologise to customers for the inconvenience, but it is necessary to allow Network Rail to safely remove the train from the line.”

The spokeswoman stressed that services tomorrow (Friday 29 July) will be broadly similar to those today.

However, there will be additional trains over and above today’s timetable – a Glasgow-Edinburgh via Shotts will run hourly; an Edinburgh-Dunblane will run hourly, and two Fife services will run from Cardenden to Edinburgh at 0758, and from Edinburgh round the Fife Circle (via Dunfermline) at 1708.
