Network Rail has revealed images of the brand new Western Concourse at King’s Cross station.

Next year, the dramatic new Western Concourse opens at King’s Cross station, marking a significant milestone in the area’s ongoing renaissance.

The refurbishment works, being carried out by Vinci Construction, are expected to be completed before the Olympics next year.

Network Rail has also said that the station will receive better connections, with links to the Underground and Thameslink available with step-free access for passengers.

Ian Fry, King’s Cross programme director for Network Rail, said:

“The redevelopment of King’s Cross station will give passengers what they want – a bigger, better, brighter station. It’s a massively important part of the regeneration of this quarter of London, continuing the improvements that have already taken place in recent years.

“We’re excited for the opening of the new concourse next spring and we hope passengers, residents and Londoners as a whole are excited too.”

King’s Cross is the busiest transport interchange in the United Kingdom with more than 47 million passengers every year.

This figure is expected to increase to 60 million passengers by 2020 with the addition of further train services, additional platform space, improved facilities within the area and improved transport interchanges with Transport for London services.

Accounting for this increasing demand, combined with the need to provide ease of access to the 2012 Olympic Games site in Stratford, has led to Network Rail investing more than £450 million into the King’s Cross Station Redevelopment Programme to transform the station into a world class transport hub by 2013 while still maintaining its Victorian history.
