GB Railfreight (GBRf) picked up the top prize for Freight and Logistics Achievement at the National Rail Awards 2011, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel Park Lane, London on 15 September 2011.

GBRf was awarded the prize for its booming biomass business, which has in the space of one year gone from trials to moving 500,000 tonnes of biomass fuel from the Port of Tyne to Drax power station near Selby, North Yorkshire.

Earlier this year GBRf commissioned a second fleet of 21 specifically modified HYA hopper wagons to meet the growing demands of its contract with Drax. The second rake will supplement an existing fleet of 25 wagons already being used to haul pelletised biomass.

GBRf’s innovation in the biomass business puts the freight hauler at the forefront of environmental development within both the rail freight and power generation industries.

John Smith, MD, GBRf, said: “I’d like to thank the whole team at GBRf for their hard work and commitment which has resulted in this fantastic award win.”

The award judges commented: “Contract volumes have doubled and a key issue has been the strength of alliance between customer and supplier. . . The panel was unanimous in proposing this entry as category winner.”
