Train operator ScotRail has launched a new – free – mobile phone app that provides ‘real time’ train running information throughout the UK combined with an easy ticket purchase option.

The ScotRail app is the only one in the UK to offer this combined functionality free of charge.

The app works across smartphone and ‘everyday’ handsets including iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Graeme Macfarlan, marketing manager, said:

“It’s like having a live departure board and a ticket office in your pocket offering instant access to travel information at any time – even when you’re on the move. You can stay informed no matter your location.

“For example you can check if a train is on time before leaving home or work – direct from your mobile. It even tells you the platform numbers.

Tickets bought via the app are available to collect within ten minutes of booking from any station with a booking office or ticket vending machine.

There are several ways to get the app:

  • text ScotRail to 86688
  • via App stores
  • mobile.scotrail.co.uk
  • QR codes being published on marketing material.
