Balfour Beatty Rail awarded Gold Coast Rapid Transit contract

Balfour Beatty Rail has been awarded a contract by Bombardier Transportation Australia Pty Ltd to design, procure, construct and commission the Overhead Catenary System on the Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project in Queensland, Australia.

The contract, which is worth approximately AUD$14 million (£9.4 million), has been awarded through the Australian business, Balfour Beatty Australia Pty Ltd.

The scope of work covers the design, to be undertaken by Parsons Brinckerhoff – Balfour Beatty’s professional services division – procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of 13km of Overhead Caternary System for Stage 1 of the Project between Gold Coast University Hospital and Broadbeach South.

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit Project is part of an 18 year Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract between the Queensland State Government and GoldLinQ (GoldLinQ Pty Ltd, McConnell Dowell Constructors Pty Ltd, Bombardier Transportation Australia Pty Ltd and KDR Gold Coast Pty Ltd).

As Operator Franchisee of Stage One the Gold Coast light system, GoldLinQ is responsible for the design, construction, operations and maintenance.

Detailed design started in early January 2012, while construction will begin in November 2012. The project is expected to be completed and operational by 2014.
