Ipswich-based renewals manager Simon Melville has won the Rail Infrastructure Award at this year’s RailStaff Awards 2012.
Simon, who has been working in the rail industry for 10 years, was nominated by his colleagues at Balfour Beatty for his determination in organising a midweek re-railing job.
Rails were replaced on a busy stretch of the Chingford line during the night. Difficult access to that part of the railway meant men and equipment had to be moved through Limehouse station. Simon organised the job and saw it was conducted safely.
The award was presented by Andrew Selwyn, account management director, on behalf of the award sponsors, McGinley Support Services.
Tom O’Connor, managing director of the Rail Media Group which organises the RailStaff Awards, said: “The general public remain largely unaware of the work that goes on over night repairing the very rails their trains run on.
“That people travel in comfort and safety on one of the busiest commuter rail networks in Europe is in no small measure because of the hard work, ingenuity and professionalism of people like Simon Melville.”
