Surrey County Council has brought in Arup to develop a rail strategy as part of its future investment plan for the county.

The strategy, which will look at reducing overcrowding and bottlenecks, will become part of Surrey Future – a document identifying investment priorities for the next 15 to 20 years.

The study will review Surrey’s position on rail services and rail infrastructure, inform future rail franchise consultations, and provide an evidence base for funding opportunities.

Stefan Sanders, Arup’s rail planning director for the UK, Middle East and Africa, said: “As a resident of Surrey, I am delighted we have the opportunity to apply Arup’s rail strategy experience to identify a package of improvements that will drive forward economic development in the county and to help Surrey connect with the rail industry planning processes to achieve this objective.”

Surrey County Council is facing a number of issues around future rail capacity into London, including access to airports for staff and passengers, and accommodating growth within existing Surrey towns.

John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said: “Good transport links are vital to the economic recovery. Surrey contributes around £28 billion to the UK economy, which is more than anywhere outside London, so it is vital this county’s rail network meets rising passenger demand.”
