Nottingham’s new tram bridge is set to continue its journey this week.

The 1,000 tonne first half of the steel bridge began its long slide into position in February but has been sat over Queen’s Road during construction of the second section.

Now that the second 52-metre segment has been built, the entire bridge can now be pushed across the live railway to its final resting position over the platform buildings and canopies at Nottingham Station.

Once in its final position, work will take place to lay a concrete deck on the bridge and install the tram tracks and a new tram stop at Nottingham Station.

The tram works at Nottingham Station are expected to be completed by the end of this year, as part of the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) Phase Two project to extend the tram network to Chilwell via the QMC and Beeston and Clifton via Wilford.

Richard Hogg, NET Phase Two construction director for Taylor Woodrow Alstom, said: “Taylor Woodrow Alstom is installing a number of impressive steel bridge structures for the NET extension project, with the help of supply chain partners, Mammoet and Cleveland Bridge. These all involve innovative and complex techniques. When complete, the combined bridges at Nottingham Station will form a landmark structure and become symbolic of the transport system within the city.”

Complementary to the tram expansion project, Nottingham City Council is working in partnership with Network Rail and East Midlands Trains on the £60 million redevelopment of Nottingham Station.
