Atkins has announced two new contracts in Denmark, covering the construction of a new railway station and 20km of new track.

One of the projects will see the engineering consultancy work alongside Rail Net Denmark and Grontmij to upgrade a section of railway line between Vamdrup and Vojens from single to double track, as part of a high-priority rail infrastructure project highlighted by the EU.

The work includes electrification of the new track, upgrading of signalling systems at four stations and replacement and renewal of bridges.

Atkins has also revealed its involvement in the redevelopment of Copenhagen’s Carlsberg district.

Until 2008, the 33-hectare site housed the Danish Carlsberg Brewery. Over the next 15 to 20 years, the district will be regenerated, with the construction of new homes, shops and a new University College of Copenhagen campus already planned.

Atkins is designing a new station for the district in collaboration with Grontmij and architectural firm Gottlieb Paludan Architects.

Lars-Kristian Sode, Atkins’ project manager, said: “This new station will provide essential transport links to service the residential and commercial districts being built around the old site of the brewery.

“Atkins has a long experience of delivering complex rail projects in Denmark. Key to the success of this project will be coordination with all parties involved for the build while synchronising the decommissioning of the current station.”

The new station, due to open in 2016, is expected to be one of the busiest urban stations in Copenhagen and will replace Enghave station which currently serves the district.
