The French city of Besançon has received the first of 19 trams ordered from Spanish rolling stock giant CAF.
Victor Hugo arrived in the city, which lies about 70 kms away from the Swiss border, on June 6 – two years after a model of the new tram went on display to the public.
All of the new vehicles are expected to be delivered by March 2014 and enter service soon after.
The trams are being manufactured by CAF at a site in France – 800 kms south west of Besançon in Bagneres-de-Bigorre.
The first light rail vehicle has been named after French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, with Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie also destined to have their names appear on the side of a tram.
