The last of Japan’s oldest E3 Series Shinkansen high-speed trains will make its final journey later this month.

The R1 set have been in operation since the mid 1990s on the Akita Shinkansen line, but from March this year all E3 Series vehicles have been gradually disappearing from the network to be replaced by the super-car-inspired E6.

On July 20, the last of the R1 set will make one last run, terminating at Akita station.

The new E6 ‘Super Komachi’ services have a maximum operating speed of 300 km/h.
