Moscow Metro concept train goes on show

Listen to this article

A concept Moscow Metro train has been unveiled by Siemens and Russian Machines in the Russian capital during Expo 1520.

The mockup is the result of a joint design study between the two companies in response to Moscow Metro’s plans to procure 3,000 new metro cars between now and 2020.

The Siemens-RM JV said it is planning on bidding for the tender when it is issued later this year.

Siemens said the concept “combines high travelling comfort with reduced noise, less vibration, air conditioning and increased passenger capacity as well as improved passenger safety” and would reduce “both energy consumption and maintenance costs”.

Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Rail Systems, said: “We are looking forward to teaming up for the Metro Moscow project with one of the most respected machine-building companies in Russia.

“We are contributing extensive know-how in the field of modern rail vehicles, already proven in Russia with the Sapsan, Lastochka and sleeping car projects for RZD, to make this cooperation successful.”
