Ashton Metrolink extension to open next week

Listen to this article

The first Metrolink tram is set to arrive in Ashton on October 9, completing the latest extension of Manchester’s light rail network.

Trams are currently undergoing testing along the 3.4km line, which will include new stops at Audenshaw, Ashton Moss, Ashton West and Ashton-under-Lyne.

Manchester Metrolink has said the opening comes “several months” ahead of the original schedule.

Passengers using the extension will be able to travel from Ashton to Manchester Piccadilly station in just over half an hour.

Councillor Andrew Fender, chairman of the Transport for Greater Manchester committee, said: “The early arrival of trams to Ashton is fantastic news and a real boon for Tameside.

“I am particularly pleased that the last government committed funding for this project before the last general election. This ensured that the contract was signed before the spending axe fell.”
