Bombardier has unveiled a new tram safety system that utilizes 3D sensors to warn drivers about potential hazards.

From the end of 2014, Bombardier’s entire portfolio of light rail vehicles will offer the new system which is currently being trialled in Frankfurt.

Trams equipped with the technology will be able to monitor upto 60 metres in front, identifying potential hazards and sounding a warning to the driver.

Bombardier, which has developed the new system alongside the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Vienna,  described initial trials as “promising”.

“This is a significant milestone in the development of a system that promises increased protection for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists,” said Bruno Kittner, site general manager at Vienna, Bombardier Transportation.
