Ground has been broken on one of the two new depots that will house rescue and maintenance vehicles for the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

In the event of a fire in the tunnel, emergency rescue trains will be dispatched from sites either side of the 55 kilometre rail tunnel at Erstfeld and Biasca.

Work is set to be completed in Erstfeld by the end of 2015, with the tunnel itself opening the following year.

A total of CHF 121 million is being spent on the two sites, which as well as overseeing emergency and rescue services, will manage general maintenance activity in the tunnel.

SBB has said that once completed, the site as Erstfeld will create around 60 new jobs.
