The Callosa de Segura tunnel, which links up a pivotal section of the €12.4 billion Madrid-Levante high-speed line, has been fully excavated.

Minister for Public Works Ana Pastor attended the tunnel breakthrough this week marking a milestone in the completion of the 61.7-kilometre between Monforte del Cid and Murcia.

Once complete, the full line will connect Madrid with the Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia and Murcia regions.

Callosa de Segura is just over two kilometres long and lies between the villages of San Isidro and Orihuela on the border between Valencia and Murcia.

The Madrid-Levante high-speed line has received over €2 billion of EU funding and December 2010 the first section connecting Valencia and Albacete was commissioned.
