Semmering Base tunnel facing delay

Listen to this article

The construction of Austria’s Semmering Base tunnel could be delayed after the country’s Superior Administrative Court suspended work on the 3.1 billion project.

Although work will continue on flood protection measures in Gloggnitz, the main construction programme is on hold until a new environmental impact assessment is submitted.

Work began in January on the €623 million tunnelling contract to construct the central section of the line.

In a statement ÖBB said it was convinced it will be able to build the 27.3-kilometre tunnel on time and to budget.

Completion is planned for 2024.
