Adani and POSCO have entered into a binding agreement to construct a new standard gauge rail freight line in Queensland’s Galilee Basin.

The non-electrified 388-kilometre heavy haul line will connect up to the Carmichael mine project – a 60 million tonne (product) per annum (Mtpa) thermal coal mine in the north Galilee Basin, 160 kilometres (km) north west of the town of Clermont, Central Queensland.

Queensland Adani Mining Pty Ltd., of India’s Adani Group and POSCO E&C, the global construction company and subsidiary of the South Korean giant POSCO, expect to complete the final contract by the end of the year and begin work on the new link in early 2015.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said “The rail project will lead to the opening of the Carmichael mine project which will deliver, in excess of 10,000 jobs, and will also provide vital opportunities for Australian infrastructure development and contribute to energy security of India by lighting the lives of millions of Indians.”

The rail corridor has been designated as a State Development Area by the Queensland Government which will allow other companies to use the infrastructure.
