Chicago’s public transport Authority has restarted the procurement process for a fleet of next-generation metro cars.

Manufacturers were originally asked to submit bids for a contract to design and build the new 7000 series trains, but the competition was cancelled after CTA received only two submissions.

The $2 billion procurement process has now been restarted, this time with a mandatory provision requiring the successful bidder to create employment opportunities for US citizens.

Launching the revised 7000 series competition, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said: “Our goal is to help create as many U.S. job opportunities as possible, and to encourage local opportunities wherever possible.

“Additionally, we believe this will increase competition among bidders and result in the best prices and highest quality product for CTA customers, essential in building a world-class transit system.”

CTA plans to issue a formal invitation to tender later this year following approval from the Federal Transit Administration.

Up to 846 new subway cars will be procured under the programme, with an initial order of 200.
