Stockholm City Council has appointed WSP to design a new metro line connecting Odenplan and Arenastaden.

The route is one of several new lines and extensions being explored by the authority. In November last year, the council said it planned to invest €2.2 billion in the city’s metro network between now and 2022, constructing 19 kilometres of new track and nine new stations.

Magnus Meyer, managing director, WSP in Sweden, said: “This is going to be a challenging project both from a technical and planning perspective. It will necessitate good cooperation with all the parties involved, including the Stockholm County Council, the City of Stockholm and the municipality of Solna.

“This is the first of a number of major contracts involving the expansion of Stockholm’s subway route. With this project, we see opportunities for creating more synergies and winning additional work.”

Other projects include extending the Blue Line to Nacka, a southern extension to Sofia and Gullmarsplan and a new line from Akalla to Barkarby.
